カトマンズ本願寺縁起
ネパール開教地カトマンズ本願寺は、福岡県北九州市の故・向坊弘道氏の発願により建立されました。
向坊氏は二十歳の時、交通事故で全身不随となりましたが、その出来事をきっかけに、お念仏の道、そして阿弥陀仏の救いに出遭いました。
「世界にお念仏の道を伝えたい」という思いから、1992年に「NGOグリーンライフ研究所ネパール」を設立し、社会福祉活動を中心に歩みを始めます。
1998年、インドのブッダガヤでソナム師と出会いました。ソナム師は向坊氏の説くお念仏の道、他力の教えに深く共感し、浄土真宗に帰依。翌1999年、グリーンライフ研究所の所長となりました。
その後ソナム師は、日本から送られた古着の配布や献血、無料健康診断などを実施し、お念仏を基盤とした社会福祉活動を広げました。そして、ネパールの仏教に縁のある多くの人々に、お念仏の教えを伝えていきました。
2003年には寺院建立を発願し、有縁の方々のご支援を得て2004年に建設を開始。会の名称も「グリーンライフ仏教協会」へ改めました。
そして2006年7月、浄土真宗本願寺派より正式に「本願寺」の名称使用を認められ、「ネパール開教地カトマンズ本願寺」が誕生しました。
ソナム・ワンディ・ブティア
当事務所の所長、ソナム・ワンディ・ブティアはチベット仏教学者であり、インド南シッキム州ヤンガンの仏教徒の家庭に生まれました。
幼少期より父から仏教教育を受け、宗教的転換を志して学問と修行に励みました。青年期には僧院で隠遁生活を送り、数多くの厳しい修行に取り組みました。これらは、より高度な悟り、すなわち現代社会のさまざまな問題に向き合う智慧へと人々を導くための努力でした。
しかし、こうした修行によって悟りを得ることの困難さを身をもって感じるようになります。高僧として知られる立場となり、身口意（三業）のすべてで修行を重ね、あらゆる命あるものを救いたいと願いながらも、雑念は消えず、完全な平安は得られませんでした。
そのような中、真実の教えを求めて仏跡ブッダガヤを訪れた際、ソナム氏は「グリーンライフ研究所・ネパール」の創立者であり、熱心な念仏者でもあった故・向坊弘道氏と出会いました。向坊氏は福岡県北九州市出身で、20歳の時に交通事故に遭い、首から下が全身麻痺となりました。しかし、この出来事をきっかけに念仏の道に導かれ、阿弥陀仏の救いに預かる身となったのです。
何度か会ううちに、ソナム氏は向坊氏の話に深く魅了されました。それは、阿弥陀仏の誓願によって永遠の救いを得るという、これまで学んできた仏教とは全く異なる視点からの教えでした。悟りへの障害となる疑念や、人間としての悩みに苦しんできたソナム氏は、向坊氏の説く仏法に内なる平安の兆しを見出し、浄土真宗と、他力によってもたらされる永遠の幸福を学びたいと願うようになりました。
1992年、向坊氏がネパールに「グリーンライフ研究所・ネパール」を設立するのに伴い、ソナム氏もネパールへ移住しました。以降、研究所の活動に仏教を取り入れ、若者が釈尊の教えを聞く機会を多く設けました。
その結果、研究所は創立当初から、献血、古着や車椅子の提供、無料健康診断などの社会福祉事業に加え、多くの若者を対象とした法話会を開催し、福祉活動を通じた仏教伝道の拠点となりました。
4年間真剣に浄土真宗を学んだソナム氏は、法蔵菩薩の誓願のはたらきを確信し、すべての疑念から解放されました。そして本格的に浄土真宗の布教に従事する決意を固め、2003年に日本の浄土真宗本願寺派の僧籍を取得。翌2004年には同宗派の教師となり、海外開教使にも任命されました。
阿弥陀仏の教えを広めたいという共通の願いを持つ、異なる二つの人格の出会いによって、ネパール初の浄土教寺院の誕生が現実のものとなろうとしていました。日本の浄土真宗寺院や多くの念仏者の支援、宗派からの助成を受け、2003年に本格的な寺院建立計画が立案され、翌2004年に建設が始まりました。
「グリーンライフ研究所・ネパール」は、寺院の建設進行に合わせて「グリーンライフ仏教協会・ネパール」へと名称を変更。さらに、ソナム氏の提案により、名称を「ネパール本願寺」とすることが決定しました。これは、協会が広めようとする阿弥陀仏の教えが、本願寺の説く浄土真宗であるためです。
2006年8月31日、向坊氏と協会理事会の同意を経て、「グリーンライフ仏教協会・ネパール」は浄土真宗本願寺派宗務総長およびネパール政府の認証を受け、名称を「ネパール本願寺協会・カトマンズ本願寺」に変更。同時に、宗派より正式にネパール開教地開教事務所として認定され、ソナム氏が初代開教事務所長に就任しました。
そして2011年3月5日、浄土真宗の宗祖・親鸞聖人の750回大遠忌法要にあわせ、同協会の開所式が盛大に執り行われました。
Introduction
The Mahayana Buddhist monk Rev.Sonam Wangdi Bhutia was born in Yangang South Sikkim India to a Buddhist Family.
Started the Buddhist practice since childhood under the guidance of his father which is based on the study, discipline and practice that lead to religious transformation. Devoted many years in monastic trainings and performed a various difficult practices. His efforts were mainly directed towards helping others to achieve greater awareness and solution for day to day challenges in life, in this fast modern era. But he experienced himself that a person is incapable to control their negative defilements through severe monastic training to attain enlightenment. Though known as a master in Tibetan Buddhism wishing to help sentient beings to get rid of from samsaric suffering and to attain perfect happiness, but still had some confusion going somewhere inside his mind and was on a seek for perfect eternal peace.
On seek of true teaching one day visit to Bodhagaya encountered with the great Nembutsu devotee Late Hiromichi Mukaibo who is the founder of Green Life Institution Nepal, the Japanese National born in Kitakyushu of Fukuoka prefecture in Japan. At the age of 20, took a tragic turn in life following a terrible automobile accident that left him paralyzed from the neck down. However, it was through this traumatic experience that led him to the way of the Nembutsu which is the teaching of being saved through the working of Amida Buddha. On their several meeting with Mukaibo, Sonam was highly fascinated towards the dharma talk of differently approached which was based on his eternal happiness came from true teaching of Amida’s Vow power. After hearing to the teaching Sonam who was unable to illuminate the doubts and negative defilements of body, suddenly saw a hope for inner peace and felt like to study Jodoshinshu through Mukaibo about how he attain eternal Happiness through Other Power. So Sonam walks to the journey towards Nepal in 1998 where Mukaibo had launched nongovernmental organization in 1992 Green Life institution Nepal. Sonam with the aim to bring awareness in Buddhism amongst the society he made GLIN as a place where the youth can get the opportunity to listen the teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha. For the involvement of youth, since then started to encourage them by organizing the various social welfare activities such as Blood donation, distributing second hand cloths, free wheel chair distribution, free health camp, and Various Dharma talks as well. Through these activities, he propagated the teaching of Buddha to those who share an interest in Buddhism.
Later after four years of study and research of Jodoshinshu, Sonam feels the working of Vow Power of Dharmakara and came throughout from all the doubts of his mind then he decided to walk in to Jodo Shinshu path and become a Jodoshinshu Minister on the year of 2003 ordained as Minister to spread the true teachings of Amitabha`s Vow Power. In following year 2004 for furthered his study in JodoShinshu he was given ‘‘Kyoshi’’ certification and in a same year was assigned as the first Regional Superintendent ‘‘Khaikyoshi’’ from Nishi Hongwanji Ha.
The Two different personalities’ carrying same wishes in life targeting at enhancing basic understanding about Buddhism and to help in spreading the teaching of the Amida Buddha amongst the society happen to give a birth to Pure land Buddhism for the first time in Nepal. In 2003, the building of a temple was made possible with the great support and contribution of many Jodo Shinshu temples from Japan, Nembutsu devotees of Japan and Nishi Hongwanji ha,construction began the following year,the organization was named as Green Life Institution Nepal.In conjunction with the newly built facility change of its name to become the Green Life Buddhist Society Nepal. The Mission of spreading the teaching of Amida Buddha was derived on Jodo Shinshu teaching so Sonam made a request to Mukaibo to change its name as Hongwanji Nepal.
The permission was granted by Mukaibo and the board excucative members of GLIBS to change its name.
On August 31st 2006 The Governor General, Jodo Shinshu Hongwanji-Ha Japan officially approved as Hongwanji Buddhist Society Nepal ,The Kathmandu Hongwanji and The government of Nepal as well. Likewise on 2011 March 5th on the auspicious occasion of Shinran Shonin’s 750th Memorial commemoration we made a very successful announcement of Opening Ceremony.
